November 2007

What's the next Big Thing in the world of breakfast? If the trendsetters are to be believed, it's healthy granola, muesli's cooler cousin. It's already on the menu at hip all-day eateries like Acorn House and decent versions are now popping up in supermarkets, too. If you haven't tried it yet, check out cult brand and Nibbles' fave, LoveDean. Previously a little difficult to get hold of, it's now popping up all over the place and might appear in Waitrose next year. The original variety is a tad sweet - go for the new 'Lite' option, while crossing your fingers that the rumoured organic line also comes to fruition.

Princess Michael of Kent starts her day with a bowl of Breakfast No. 1, £5.95 (ring 01428 654253 or visit lovedeanlarder.com), made of nuts, seeds and jumbo oats mixed with healthy hemp and pumpkin oil. Possible the country's poshest granola (Robin Birley is an addict and has ordered it for all his London clubs), there's not a trace of artificial additives and it's sweetened with natural honey rather than corn syrup.

Jan 2006

Local businesswoman, Lucy O'Donnell of Lovedean Larder Ltd, is celebrating being named 'Breakfast Champion' of the South, for her commitment to the promotion of delicious, healthy breakfasts.

Judge Naomi Barry on behalf of HGCA, declared that the breakfast cereal produced at Lovedean Larder was indeed worthy of ‘Breakfast Champion’ status. She was particularly impressed by the use of local quality ingredients. “Breakfast No. 1 is a contemporary take on cereal, containing no additives or preservatives, but premium local ingredients.”

Lovedean Larder's Lucy O'Donnell is on a mission to banish E numbers and additives from children's - and adult's' - diets.

Positive reactions from friends and family spurred her to commercialise the cereal, which she named Breakfast No. 1. She approached a local design company called Isis to work on the label and packaging and set about registering Breakfast No. 1 as a trademark and sourcing recyclable 450g plastic tubs.

With her product and packaging ready, O'Donnell started selling the cereal over the Internet. Several months on, mail order sales continue to form the bulk of Lovedean Larder's business, but she has also developed other distribution channels. Breakfast No. 1 is now sold in health clubs, restaurants and delicatessens, including Indulgence in Petersfield, South Harting Stores in West Sussex and The Kitchen Garden in Argyll.

Lovedean Larder is causing a stir by producing gorgeous nutritious granola and branching out into healthy snacks for children, discovers Anna Tyzack.

The word has spread and sales of 'Breakfast No. 1' are booming. Lucy is in the process of perfecting "Breakfast No. 1" chocolate bars, made from the same ingredients plus 70% organic dark chocolate. 'I have not yet come across a confectionery that is delicious and not bad for you,' she says, 'And lets face it, kids do like to have sweets sometimes - so I thought this would be perfect for them, instead of run of the mill chocolate bars and crisps etc which are full of E numbers and preservatives'.

Lovedean Larder will also be producing 'Breakfast No. 1' snack packs; small pot of nuts and seeds with a savoury coating, perfect for school lunch boxes, snacks and salads.
